This is an app we’ve recently finished, which allows people to construct an avatar similar in look to the Yahoo avatar app.

There’s various item categories:

Faces (with custom skin colours)
Hairstyles (again colour-able)
Outfits
Tops (t-shirts etc)
Bottoms (trousers)
Extras (accessories)
Scenes (location backgrounds)
Friends - see your friends’ avatars

..as well as animated emotes:

Blink
Happy
Sad
Angry

Both male and female are available - it switches according to your profile settings.

Some items are locked, depending on the number of invites you’ve sent out to friends.

You can also add a comment to go alongside. Once saved the avatar is published on your profile along with your comments, and it also saves out a jpg image for you to use elsewhere.

Technical details:
Flex client, using Flash Remoting and php calls into a mySql database. All the assets are easily referenced from xml, so adding new content can be done on the fly without rebuilding the client or database.

As an application it’s ready to ship - it really needs more art assets for different items to be complete, though.
